The first type of pigment is generally smaller and appears very different when inspected under a microscope.
This pigment looks like knotted clumps of thread or as if it has tiny lamellae or scales.
A chemical analysis shows that it contains iron which is not found in eumelanin.
This pigment appears as blonde or red in hair and is called pheomelanin (Red yellow pigment).

Red Hair – Varies in depth but not as overloaded with tone

Magnified Hair – Very similar, two strands high concentration of pheomelanin

Cortex is full of a high concentration of pheomelanin

Enlarged version of distribution of pigment
High in concentration but also some pheomelamim melanosome entangled together. Different shapes and sizes.

Pigment Cell – Melanocyte
