WHAT WILL I DO ON THIS COURSE? 

You will gain the skills you need to start a successful career in Hairdressing and will learn about working in the industry. During your time at the Academy there will opportunities to participate in regional competitions where Reflections Training Academy have achieved many awards.

Functional skills in Maths and English will also be taught throughout your course unless you gained these qualifications in school.

The overall grade (pass/distinction) for the apprenticeship will be determined by an end-point assessment.

On-programme stage

On-programme training and assessment is carried out by achieving the Diploma for Hair Professionals, which consists of the units shown below:

  • Consultation
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Cutting hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks
  • Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques

Options (choose one)

  • Perming hair
  • Hair relaxing treatments and techniques
  • Hair extension services

Assessment

The end-point assessment tests the skills, knowledge and behaviours set out in the standards by:

1) A practical assessment

2) Oral questioning. It is the final stage of the Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing) which is required for completion of the Hair Professional apprenticeship

Professionalism and values, behaviours and communication, and safe working practices are embedded within the qualification units.

Pre-Apprenticeship Level 2 Certificate / Study Programme

The Study Programme can help you:

  • Prepare for an apprenticeship and work experience (salon placement)

  • Improve your English or Maths

  • Gain a vocational qualification

While you are on programme you may be eligible for:

How long will it take to complete the programme?

  • It is estimated that you could complete this programme within 26 weeks (individual training plan)

The Programme includes:

  • A personal makeover in preparing you for your salon/work experience

  • Confidence-building activities such as: attending shows, organisation, planning and competition work

  • Attend wedding workshops, barbering workshops & African hair workshops

  • This programme will offer a good introduction  to Hairdressing and gaining the basic skills and knowledge, inclusive of fun activities

  • Employability Skills: Maths and /or English, Functional Skills

  • The duration of the programme is an estimated 26 weeks on Study Programme & 6 months on a traineeship

VRQ Level 2 in Hairdressing & Barbering Qualification

Here are the units that you will be required to complete in order to achieve your VRQ level 2. Some of the units are compulsory and others are optional and will be discussed at Induction.

Mandatory Units – all to be achieved

  • Working in the hair industry (4 credits)

  • Follow health and safety in the salon (3 credits)

  • Client consultation for hair services (3 credits)

  • Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp (3 credits)

  • The art of hairdressing (5 credits)

Optional Units

  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector (7 credits)

  • The art of colouring hair

All apprentices will complete the core skills and knowledge (Part 1) and will choose the occupational option route for hairdressing or barbering (Part 2).

Part 1 – Mandatory core skills and knowledge for hairdressing and barbering.

Overview of the role

Working as a barber or hairdresser to provide hair cutting, styling and grooming services for men and women.

Details of standard

Occupational profile

There are two distinctly different job roles within this occupational profile: Hairdresser and Barber.

Hairdressers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create a variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for ladies and men.

Barbers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using barbering techniques, style and finish hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men.

Hairdressers and barbers must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.

Advanced and Creative Standard –

Hair Professional Level 3

Awarding Body: City & Guilds

Course Length: 14 months

English and Maths

The apprentice must achieve level 2 English and maths prior to taking their end-point assessment. For those with an education health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3.

Who is this course for? 

Next steps for anyone who has achieved the Hair Professional Standard and wants to further their creative skills. You will need a keen interest in the Hairdressing industry and be committed and motivated to progress and succeed.

How is this course delivered?

During the course, Learners will create and collect a portfolio of evidence for assessment. The End Point Assessment will consist of written, oral and observational practice evidence.

What can I do after?

Options for your career include applying to: work on cruise ships, session stylist, Film and TV work, being part of a creative art team, catwalk hair, working with big brands such as Wella, and L’Oreal as ambassadors or educators etc. or continuing working in a salon or self-employment.

Additional cost

You will be required to purchase a standard kit. The cost is around £75. The information will be given to you on our pre-inductions which take place every Thursday, once you join the Academy, to prepare you ready to start your training.

We strongly encourage progression to advanced qualifications.

About the course

This is an opportunity to gain advanced skills that will further develop your career in Hairdressing. Being an Apprentice enables you to work hands-on, every day doing what you love. You will be able to provide quality service and be able to work to the highest industry standards developing personal and professional skills. Additionally, creating a portfolio of personal work demonstrating techniques in creative colour conversion and precision cuts. You will also learn English, Maths, client communication and much more. You will need an NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing to apply.

As a learner in this course you will become someone who: 

  • researches fashion forward trends, using the results to create, plan and promote a collection of hairstyle looks that reflect their own individuality
  • analyses the factors that influence the design and creation of the collection of hairstyle looks, including the target audience
  • designs a range of looks to create a fashion-forward collection of hairstyle looks
  • uses and adapts a range of sectioning and cutting guidelines, creative and precision techniques and technical skills to create and enhance the collection of hairstyle looks
  • carries out precision and personalised cutting tailored to individual client characteristics
  • formulates imaginative creative advanced colour conversion services to change the depth and tone of the hair
  • uses a range of creative finishing and dressing techniques, advanced creative colouring techniques to enhance the collection of hairstyle looks
  • presents, showcases and promotes their skills through their collection of hairstyle looks via a variety of media types and platforms
  • provides a smoothing strengthening service to clients
  • carries out in-depth consultation and complex analysis of the hair
  • provides advice on future services and products

evaluates the results of the service to improve further practice

Interview

You will need an interview for this course – Interviews take place at the Training Academy Monday – Friday all year round. You will meet with our recruitment team for around 1 ½ hours, we will cover all aspects of the course and if you already have a salon to work in then you can continue working there.
