Mod Cuts: A Fresh Take on a Classic
Oasis are back and so is the Mod cut.
A Mod cut is all about strong fringe, fuller sides, and a rounded silhouette. It’s all about texture, scissor work and styling.
You want a bit of length, lots of movement and might want to use a texturising spray, or powder to give it some lift.

Modern Buzz Cuts: Minimal & Bold
Buzz cuts have never been just one thing. Think David Beckham’s clean classics, Brad Pitt’s 4 on the top 2 on the sides, or Jake Gyllenhaal’s Jarhead military-style cut. Whether you’re going for a classic all-over buzz, a mid fade, or a high-and-tight, there’s a cut to match every client.
Styling choices also make a huge difference. Do you want a tight, sharp line-up using a hair chalk or powder, or a softer, more natural edge that gives a slightly fluffy finish.
And don’t forget the facial hair. Will it be disconnected, bold and separate, or blended into the cut for a seamless look? A well-considered beard or stubble can elevate a simple buzz into a complete statement.

Slick-Back Taper Cuts
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seeing Declan Rice everywhere lately – his slick hair with tapered sides is really really making waves this season.
The slick-back mid-fade is a classic, but this season it’s got a fresh, modern edge.
What keeps it modern is styling with a matte finish. You might consider using a matte clay product or mousse to leave a natural texture. It works with almost any face shape so this is a great option for any client.
High Fade with Long, Textured Top
The high fade with a long, textured top is a confident cut. The short sides make the longer top pop, and all that texture gives it movement and personality.
You can keep it neat with a bit of styling cream, or mess it up a little for a more relaxed, lived-in look. Either way, it works. It’s a style that feels modern and fresh without trying too hard, and it’s the kind of cut people notice because it just looks sharp.
Take on the Modern Barber Award
If your cut is well executed, you could be in with a chance to win the Modern Barber Award. You don’t have to go wild or completely out of the box, we’re looking for precision, style, and creativity that plays to your strengths while complementing your client’s overall look.
Think about the full picture: what your client is wearing, how the style works with their personality, and how it all comes together on stage. You’ll also be asked to create a mood board for your chosen trend and take before-and-after photos to feature in a reel.
It’s all about showing that you understand the trends, can execute them with skill, and can present them in a way that looks polished and professional.
